Blackpool Weekend

The weekend started badly, with a trip to the dentist, always a favourite. Fortunately I needed no work doing, so I was soon back home, to finish packing the car.

I had a mad scramble to find some dance music, as we did not know if there would be any afternoon dancing. I had nothing organised, and so I was hoping that it would not be needed. There is little worse than a disorganised dance. I have made a note to organise some dance music in my computor for again. Fortunately it was not needed this time, but it is always best to be prepared.

The car was not fully packed when we got the call from Sharon (Steves wife not the tango teacher). She had to work in the morning and so was also not able to get the coach that was organised. So car loaded at just before two we were off to Blackpool.

The bus, we had heard, was already there, so we would miss the mass check in. All the people who were making ther own way had been instructed to arrive after two, so hopefully we would miss them too.

We finally arrived at about quarter past three and were soon installed in our room, and resting ready for the nights activities.

Steve excelled himself again and the entertainmnet was first notch. He was helped out by Dewi who played a few CDs allowing Steve time to dance with Sharon. The night was all too soon over and we all left for bed exhausted.

The following day Saturday, was Valentines, Steve and Sharon had spent the day decorating the ball room, with balloons and cards lovingly made by Jan. The walls were covered with Valentines banners hearts and flowers. The format of the night was similar to Friday, with Dewi once more allowing Steve time to dance.

Time was given for a few party games, and as usual I failed to win anything, but it was the taking part that counts.

It was decided during the night that we would have a tea dance the following afternoon, again hosted by Steve and Dewi. This kept us all occupied, but in truth the weather was much better and I think some decided to make the most of it. Thanks to The Kimberly Hotel for the tea and coffee, instead of paying for them donations went to the local animal rescue.

Sunday night and Steve went into his full crazy mode, we had visits from ex presidents, Dolly Parton, Jordan, Mae West, even Elvis graced us with his presence. All too soon it was over, and I must return to work again. Roll on the next time.

Happy New Year

First let me apologise for being a day late, but I wanted to include Dave Bassett’s party in my post.

We brought the new year in at The Memorial Hall Wrexham. Steve, who had organised the occasion was on top form. The group who normally attend these socials are not the easiest to please, but we never heard one complaint.

Steve again brought out his trumpet and gave us a blast, not having tried myself, I can only give the opinions of others, who tell me that to play the keyboard and trumpet at the same time requires some skill. All I know is that we love it and we want more.

New Years day evening is always a bit flat, and so it was nice for once to be invited to Shrewsbury again for a House Milonga. Dave Bassett had invited a few tangueros for an evening of dancing.

He, like most of us completely hooked ones, has a room dedicated to dancing. I was impressed with the technology he had, as well as the obvious sound system, he had a projector screen covering one wall and one of those back lit televisions on the other, and while we danced we were treated to tango videos from Youtube.

The group from Shrewsbury is starting to develope into a knowlegable and friendly group, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Dave. He has a battle on his hands though as the, neo, nuevo, show dance, fantasia, whatever you choose to call it faction, is still in evidence and seem determined to take over.

I will be keeping an eye on the Shrewsbury scene and Dave in particular through the coming year ( as best the distance and my work allows) because with the enthusiasm that is there, I am sure that it will grow and grow.

Prospero Año Nuevo a todos.

Feliz Navidad

I hope everyone had a good Christmas. As usual things have gone a bit quiet twixmas.

Last Monday we had a class in Chester that involved some balloon work. As the numbers were more or less balanced, I sat out and just watched the fun. The people taking part in the class seemed to have enjoyed it, but sitting on the sidelines, I was in stitches most of the time.  I am sure a lot was gained and it was worth the struggle, I know in the times when I joined the class as either a leader or follower, it was definitely helping everyone. But this was one class that I was more than happy to just watch, when trying to dance with three balloons the comic effect was indescribable. Sharon had been asked about volcadas by some one who had seen Strictly Come Dancin. She decided wisely to show the basics but not how to lead into one. Everyone wants to run before they can walk. Even though this class have advanced amazingly, they are not yet ready for moves this advanced.

Thank you to those who sent me birthday wishes, it is nice to know people care. There was an absence of dances and we were planning to just go for an Indian, but at the last minute Steve invited us to join him at Cricieth.

There are regular coach trips to the Lion Hotel, groups of, usually pensioner, who stay for tinsel and turkey breaks. ( Christmas comes from mid October until mid February) Steve is one of the regular acts who appear. You never know what he is going to do as it all depends on the crowd.

Anyway, last night we had a wonderful meal there, after which we sat out and waited for the entertainment. ( the waiter said we could stay, to which I replied that we had no option as we lived fifty miles away and had come with Steve).

As he got started we had a waltz but only one other couple joined us. It did not look as if we would get much dancing. Although I did lead a conga chain (Steve always singles me out) the only other dance we got was a foxtrot at the end. To be fair they were a difficult crowd, but even Sharon (Steve’s wife) enjoyed the show, so he was on top form, and everyone left happy in the end.
